Vlietland: Randstad Riviera!

Vlietland (300 ha.) is one of the largest and most attractive water sports, recreation and nature reserves in the Netherlands.

At the heart of it are three lakes totalling a surface area of approx. 130 ha. Around the lakes are woods, creeks, meadows and parks.

There are plenty of opportunities for recreation on water and on land. Vlietland has a climbing park, an aqua park, a camping site, a water sports, sailing and windsurfing association, a sailing school, a rowing club, water bike rental, canoes, sailing boats, motor boats and rowing boats, harbours on the Vliet, a port on one of the inner lakes, a beautiful restaurant by the waterfront and several other places to eat.

In addition, there are beaches, including one naturist beach. There are also all kinds of trails to follow for hikers, bikers and horseback riders. Events are organised here almost every week, especially in summer. Waterways, cycle paths and hiking trails connect from Vlietland to its beautiful surroundings full of culture and history, like the Green Heart, the Dutch Lakes, and the century-old historic cities of Leiden, Voorschoten, Leidschendam, Voorburg, The Hague and Delft.

Forty-five years ago, cows and sheep grazed in the polders that once were called Vlietland. In 1970, extraction of sand started here, leading to the creation of what is today, one of the most popular (and free) water sports, recreational and natural areas of South Holland with over a million visitors per year!
