My Favorite Place: “Plan het Kan”

Where: the Vlietwijk between Oranjeboomstraat, Christiaan Huygensstraat, Professor Asserlaan and Raadhuislaan, Voorschoten

Why: At the end of the 1950s there was a huge housing shortage. Contractor Jo de Graaff came up with a plan for more than 80 homes, for NLG 10,000. "That's never possible" was the standard response. So he called it "Plan 't Can". When Jo de Graaff became alderman for housing, he was able to implement his plan. Despite disbelief and problems, the houses were built and they are still there after 60 years!
The houses were originally very small. Sober and effective, we would say these days. With a floor area of less than 40 m2 over two floors, the houses were fantastic for first-time buyers and newlyweds who stayed in the attic of the parents-in-law. But it quickly became a problem for families with children. That is why, around the 1980s, extensions were added at the rear, plus superstructures, making the houses almost 50% larger.
The beauty of this neighborhood is the diversity. Colorful streets and still some houses in the original form.
The habitation is also very diverse. There are still a few original inhabitants, but also many new families with children. In short; a neighborhood that is full of life. It's still possible!
