My Favorite Place: The Duivenvoordse and Veenzijdse polder in the former beach plain between Wassenaar and Voorschoten.

Where: That is the open and vast area that you encounter when you walk from De Horsten to Duivenvoorde Castle.

Why: I think it is very special that this landscape with medieval allotment has remained intact in the middle of the Randstad. It is a vast area with a very open character and in the distance you can see the forests of the estates. Because it was originally a wet area (a plain between two old beach walls), it is now mainly grassland with here and there wet swamp forests. There are very few places in the Hollandse Duinen National Park where you can experience the space like this. You can also enjoy it from the train between The Hague and Leiden and with a bit of luck see deer or storks.
