My Favorite Place: The Molenpad, over the dike between the meadows on the De Horsten estate

Where: Molenpad, attn. Raaphorst 3, Wassenaar. Wassenaar/Voorschoten border

Why: It is a very narrow, adventurous path. There are pollard willows along, interspersed with hawthorn bushes. On both sides a ditch, the banks lush with all kinds of wild plants. In spring, with the white of the hawthorns and the cow parsley and the yellow of the irises, a true flower feast! But it is beautiful in all seasons. It is so wide there, you can hardly imagine that you are in the middle of the Randstad. And then that high bridge over the Veenwatering, with beautiful views in all directions! I first came here when I was a student, in the 1970s. It was a compulsory excursion led by Wim ter Keurs, who told us about the beach walls (old dunes, now wooded) and the beach plains (now pasture) in between. A landscape to be careful of!
